Modern marine electronics from companies such as Garmin, Furuno and Raymarine now tout a wide variety of "multifunction" uses including charting, radar, sounder and video monitoring. Unfortunately the displays on many of these devices are typically no larger than 8"-12" in size which limits the user's ability to truly monitor the multiple functions on one small display. Some 15" and larger multifunction models are available but are rather costly and often too large in size for practical mounting on many vessels.
Now the widely used "Black Box" interface allows you to connect this equipment to a larger display of your choice so you can legitimately see multiple functions at once. Deciding which display to connect to your Black Box electronics should be determined by a number of factors including sunlight readability, installation location (water or corrosion resistance), size (both screen and case), connections and cost.
